My Periods Are Extremely Heavy: Do You Know Why?
If you have extremely heavy menstrual bleeding, you’re not alone. Some studies show that up to one-third of American women experience heavy bleeding today.
At Daniel Rostein, MD, FACOG, the practice of esteemed board-certified OB/GYN and fertility expert Dr. Daniel Rostein, we specialize in detecting and treating the causes of excessive uterine bleeding.
For December’s blog, we’re covering the causes of extremely heavy bleeding and talking about how we can help.
Defining excessive bleeding
Excessive bleeding technically means losing more than 80 ml of blood monthly. But, that’s not a hard-and-fast definition because lesser blood loss than that may have serious negative effects on your mental, emotional, and physical wellness.
When bleeding is heavy enough to make you uncomfortable, interfere with your plans, or reduce your quality of life, it’s time to reach out for help.
Diagnosing excessive bleeding
Dr. Rostein and our experienced specialists use tests like physical exams, ultrasound imaging, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to find the cause of your excessive bleeding.
You may need a minimally invasive procedure, hysteroscopy, in which a miniature camera examines your uterus. Sometimes, the hysteroscopy includes a biopsy, in which a tiny tissue sample is taken for lab testing.
Determining the cause of your excessive bleeding
Causes of excessive bleeding can vary widely, but some of the most common are:
- Uterine fibroids: growths made of muscle cells
- Polyps: growths made of glandular tissue
- Endometriosis: uterine lining growing outside the uterus
- Adenomyosis: uterine lining growth into the uterine wall
- Pelvic inflammatory disease: infection of upper reproductive organs
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS): hormone problem causing many small cysts
- Uterine cancer
- Copper intrauterine device
- Medications, such as blood thinners
- Ectopic pregnancy: pregnancy outside the uterus
Many women have one of these conditions along with other problems. For example, about 40% of women with infertility have endometriosis.
