My Periods Are Extremely Heavy: Do You Know Why?

My Periods Are Extremely Heavy: Do You Know Why?

If you have extremely heavy menstrual bleeding, you’re not alone. Some studies show that up to one-third of American women experience heavy bleeding today.

At Daniel Rostein, MD, FACOG, the practice of esteemed board-certified OB/GYN and fertility expert Dr. Daniel Rostein, we specialize in detecting and treating the causes of excessive uterine bleeding

For December’s blog, we’re covering the causes of extremely heavy bleeding and talking about how we can help.

Defining excessive bleeding

Excessive bleeding technically means losing more than 80 ml of blood monthly. But, that’s not a hard-and-fast definition because lesser blood loss than that may have serious negative effects on your mental, emotional, and physical wellness.

When bleeding is heavy enough to make you uncomfortable, interfere with your plans, or reduce your quality of life, it’s time to reach out for help.

Diagnosing excessive bleeding

Dr. Rostein and our experienced specialists use tests like physical exams, ultrasound imaging, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to find the cause of your excessive bleeding.

You may need a minimally invasive procedure, hysteroscopy, in which a miniature camera examines your uterus. Sometimes, the hysteroscopy includes a biopsy, in which a tiny tissue sample is taken for lab testing.

Determining the cause of your excessive bleeding

Causes of excessive bleeding can vary widely, but some of the most common are:

Many women have one of these conditions along with other problems. For example, about 40% of women with infertility have endometriosis.

Treatment solutions for excessive bleeding

Our team is here to support and help you, regardless of what has caused your excessive bleeding. Medication, minimally invasive procedures, and reproductive surgeries can stem your excessive bleeding while also helping to solve infertility challenges.

Excessive bleeding quickly improves with treatment in most cases, so it won’t keep you down or leave you struggling long-term if you get the proper treatment.

If you’re trying to conceive and can’t do so naturally, even after treatment, additional options like intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in vitro fertilization (IVF) can help you build your family.

Extremely heavy periods are common, and our team has extensive experience in solving the issues behind them. We’re here to help, so don’t hesitate to call our office or contact us online today.
